March 16, 2003 . Pachaug Trail, RI/CT A weekend hike through what we thought to be the last of the season's snow and ice. The Pachaug Trail, around Beach Pond in Arcadia State Forest, crosses from Rhode Island into Connecticut, winding through high pine forests, swampy lowlands, rocky bluffs, and great hemlock groves. Here we find many species of wood-rot fungi just emerging from the ice on fallen logs. Mosses and lichens seem especially abundant in the areas of protected forest, where we also see clear deer sign (slide 22). |
