September 20, 2002 . First Beach, Newport, RI
Collecting algal mat from First Beach in Newport. Alex's fixation this week, to be used in an upcoming exhibit.... In the summer, this mix of fine filamentous reds fills the water and covers much of the beaches on this shore in Newport and Middletown. Keeps many beachgoers at bay, but strangely draws us. The town of Middletown has a big sign for parking that reads "No Seaweed, Park Here". We cut out thick sections and rolled up older sections that had dried into a cohesive felt, bleached on top but still deep red beneath. | |
