October 28, 2002 . Narragansett, RI Diversity of life at the shore. Fucus covered in a sandpaper-like bryozoa; a skate egg; out-of-focus Corallina next to Polyides and another skate egg; a better look at Corallina, which is an articulated calcified red alga (it has a stone-like surface but also has joints so that it can bend to withstand stress from waves); normal and helical forms of Laminaria; a red crustose epiphyte on Palmaria; a skate ("it's sleeping, Molly"); more mounds of drift; one of the more artistic holdfasts I've seen; and Palmaria covered in a neon-orange colonial tunicate (possibly Botrylloides diegensis).
